Barrick Gold Boosts Reserves with Reko Diq Project

Canadian miner Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX: ABX) has announced a significant increase in its gold reserves, driven largely by its Reko Diq copper-gold project. According to a statement from the company, the overall proven and probable gold reserves jumped 23% to 17.4 million ounces by the end of 2024. Read more about the announcement here.

The impressive addition of 13 million ounces to the company's probable reserves was achieved on an attributable basis following the completion of a feasibility study at Reko Diq. Barrick holds a 50% stake in the project, with the remainder owned by the governments of Pakistan and Balochistan. This project is considered one of the largest underdeveloped copper-gold deposits globally and is projected to commence production by 2028.

Meanwhile, reserves in Barrick's operations within the Africa and Middle East region saw a modest increase of about 1.1%, reaching 19 million ounces in 2024. This growth was largely driven by the company's Loulo-Gounkoto mine in Mali and the Bulyanhulu mine in Tanzania. However, Barrick faced challenges in Mali last month, as operations at the mine were suspended following the military-led government's seizure of three metric tons of gold, valued at approximately $245 million, in a bid for a larger revenue share.
