BHP and Rio Tinto Unite for Australia's Largest Electric Furnace

In a significant stride towards decarbonizing the steel industry, leading mining giants BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group have announced their collaboration with BlueScope Steel Ltd. to construct Australia's largest electric iron-making furnace near Perth (source). This pilot project at Kwinana is projected to generate between 30,000 to 40,000 tons of molten iron annually, using a combination of natural gas and hydrogen initially, provided by the new consortium partner, Woodside Energy Group Ltd.

The global steel industry contributed approximately 10.5% to carbon dioxide emissions in 2021, highlighting the pressing need for transformative solutions. The innovative project by BHP and Rio Tinto aims to employ hydrogen for power generation, potentially lowering emissions by up to 80% when combined with renewables and green hydrogen.

The venture underscores a pivotal shift from conventional coal-powered blast furnaces to electric furnaces capable of processing iron ore, particularly from the Pilbara region, which accounts for almost 60% of the world's seaborne iron ore supply. Despite challenges with the lower grade ores from Pilbara, the anticipated commissioning of the facility in 2028 marks a crucial step not only for Australia but for the global steel production landscape, including in major markets such as China.

If successful, this initiative could set a precedent for steel mills worldwide, aligning with the urgent global agenda to reduce industrial carbon footprints.
