Gordon Brothers, the Boston-based asset liquidation firm, has embarked on the sale of leases for over 460 Big Lots stores across the United States. This move highlights the financial challenges faced by the Ohio-based retailer, which had filed for bankruptcy in September of the previous year. The stores, primarily located in shopping centers across 47 states, range from 19,000 to 55,000 square feet, providing a substantial expansion opportunity for prospective buyers. The leasing process began on January 14, with purchase offers due by January 24.

Big Lots, once the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the U.S., has been contending with declining sales, placing significant strain on a balance sheet that showed $556.1 million in debt as noted in court documents. Despite attempts to sell the chain to Nexus Capital Management, the deal was unsuccessful, resulting in the current asset sale process facilitated by Gordon Brothers. This liquidation is central to Big Lots' strategy to manage its bankruptcy proceedings.

Moreover, Gordon Brothers announced a pivotal agreement to transfer between 200 and 400 of these Big Lots locations to Variety Wholesalers, Inc., headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina. This transaction assures that these specific stores will continue operating under the Big Lots brand, with the potential to retain existing staff at both the retail establishments and distribution centers.
