BlackRock Set to Launch Bitcoin ETP in Europe Amid Growing Interest

BlackRock Inc., the world's leading asset manager, is making strides to introduce an exchange-traded product (ETP) directly linked to Bitcoin in Europe, as reported by Bloomberg. Building on the triumph of its $58 billion U.S. ETF, the new European fund is anticipated to be based in Switzerland, gearing up for its debut as early as this month.

While BlackRock maintains an impressive portfolio of managing over $4.4 trillion in assets within exchange-traded funds (ETFs), this new initiative marks its maiden entry into crypto-linked ETPs outside North America. The company's growing advocacy for digital assets has notably resonated in recent years, with CEO Larry Fink highlighting Bitcoin's potential as a protective measure against currency debasement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

In the U.S., Bitcoin-tied ETFs have witnessed soaring demand, amassing $116 billion across 12 different funds. BlackRock's own iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) stands out, setting industry benchmarks with its record-breaking ETF debut. The cryptocurrency market's remarkable upturn, influenced by political dynamics such as the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, saw Bitcoin reaching an unparalleled $109,241 in January. Trump's vocal endorsement of the industry and forthcoming regulatory clarity continue to allure more financial entities.

The European landscape for cryptocurrency ETPs, though smaller in comparison, remains highly competitive with over 160 available products tracking Bitcoin, Ether, and other digital coins. Its $17.3 billion scale, however, remains modest next to the U.S. market. Samara Cohen and Jay Jacobs of BlackRock have highlighted the dual appeal of ETPs offering Bitcoin exposure to investors, further cementing the asset's rising allure.
