American imports of aluminium doors and windows spiked from $819M in 2019 to $870M in 2020. In physical terms, imports rose by +11% y-o-y to 143K tons. Colombia ($225M), Canada ($197M) and China ($178M) became the most significant suppliers regarding the value of exports to the U.S. In 2020, imports of aluminium doors and windows from Colombia and China soared by +10% y-o-y and +20% y-o-y, respectively, while shipments from Canada fell by -12% y-o-y. Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing supplier in 2020, increasing its shipments threefold against the previous year to $27.5M.

Belgium’s copper imports spiked by +14.9% y-o-y to $1.5B in 2020. In physical terms, imports rose by +3.2% y-o-y, reaching 175K tons. Bulgaria supplies nearly half of the total copper volume imported to Belgium. In 2020, Belgium’s purchases from Bulgaria and Spain recorded significant growth. The average copper import price increased by +11% y-o-y to $8,266 per ton last year.

Indonesia sharply increased ferroalloy exports due to booming demand from its major trade partner, China. The supplies to China grew nearly twofold, while the total exports from Indonesia spiked from 1.6M tons in 2019 to 2.9M tons in 2020. In value terms, China’s purchases comprise 96% of total ferroalloy exports from Indonesia.

Last year, China’s aluminum imports skyrocketed from $511M to $3.8B. Malaysia, Russia and India became the largest aluminum suppliers, with a combined 52%-share of China’s imports. Over the last year, the imports from Russia rose thirteen times, while the purchases from Malaysia increased nearly fivefold. India emerged as the third top supplier, moving from the seventh place it held in the previous year. In 2020, the average aluminum import price dropped by -6.2% y-o-y to $1,659 per ton.

China's aluminium foil exports dropped by -4.9% to 1.2M tons. The supplies to South Korea, Thailand and India constitute 22% of China's foil exports. India, the largest importer of Chinese foil, recorded the most remarkable reduction of purchases. The supplies from China to South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia grew slightly.

In the mid-term, demand for aluminum in the construction sector and car manufacturing is forecast to steadily rise. The rapid development of alternative energy sources will also drive the market up because aluminum is used in the production of solar batteries, wind generators and other components of energy facilities. In China, the launch of quotas on greenhouse gas emissions could lead to higher prices for aluminum as production for the metal in the country leaves a heavy carbon footprint.

China steel prices continue to level off from mid-May heights off the back of sluggish seasonal demand, declines in domestic manufacturer steel consumption and government pledges to curb “unreasonable” demand, despite tighter climate controls on steel production. Overall, Asia-Pacific steel prices are still set to stay elevated in the medium-term with support from robust infrastructure spending, though concerns loom oversupply capacity expansions in South-East Asia and tightening of fiscal spending in China.

Nickel prices skyrocketed on the expectations of a shortage on the global market provoked by the increase in demand that outpaces the supply growth. The rebound in the steel industry and rising electric vehicle manufacturing drive nickel consumption. Pandemic-related lockdowns in the first half of 2020 and the related uncertainty led to a decrease in the global nickel mine output by -4% y-o-y. Despite this, refined nickel production increased by +2% y-o-y, boosted by the recovering demand from mid-2020 and the use of secondary smelting. Indonesia, the largest nickel ore producer worldwide, banned exports of the ore and thus achieved a record output of refined nickel.
