Alumina Price in Brazil Shrinks 2% to $320 per Ton

Brazil Alumina Export Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the alumina price stood at $320 per ton (FOB, Brazil), which is down by -2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 17% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $458 per ton. From May 2022 to December 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In December 2022, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($325 per ton) and Canada ($322 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iceland ($307 per ton) and Norway ($319 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Brazil Alumina Exports

In December 2022, approximately 637K tons of alumina were exported from Brazil; dropping by -6.9% compared with November 2022 figures. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when exports increased by 30% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 874K tons. From September 2022 to December 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, alumina exports contracted to $204M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 31% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $346M. From May 2022 to December 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil Alumina Exports by Country

Norway (238K tons), Canada (223K tons) and Iceland (68K tons) were the main destinations of alumina exports from Brazil, together accounting for 83% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 17%.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for alumina exported from Brazil were Norway ($76M), Canada ($72M) and Iceland ($21M), with a combined 83% share of total exports. the United States and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main countries of destination, Argentina, with a CAGR of +47.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Factors Affecting Alumina Prices

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the decline in alumina prices in Brazil. Firstly, global demand for aluminum has softened due to slower economic growth in China, the world's largest consumer of the metal. This has led to overcapacity in the global aluminum market and put downward pressure on prices. Secondly, Brazilian producers have ramped up production in recent years.

Brazil is one of the world's largest producer of alumina. Brazil's large reserves of high-quality bauxite – the raw material used to produce alumina – provide a significant cost advantage over other suppliers. This is expected to keep Brazilian alumina prices competitive in the global market.
