Price of Cheese and Curd in Brazil Up by 3% to $5,430 per Ton Following Five Consecutive Months of Increase

Brazil Cheese And Curd Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the cheese and curd price amounted to $5,430 per ton (CIF, Brazil), with an increase of 3% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 3.2% month-to-month. The import price peaked in June 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($10,921 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($5,194 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Cheese And Curd Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered ($11,505 per ton), while the price for fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($4,883 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (+7.1%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Cheese And Curd Imports

In June 2023, the amount of cheese and curd imported into Brazil contracted markedly to 3.2K tons, with a decrease of -18.9% compared with the month before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 44% month-to-month.

In value terms, cheese and curd imports declined sharply to $18M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a slight increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports increased by +59.3% against December 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 47% against the previous month.

Brazil Cheese And Curd Imports by Type

Fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (2K tons), cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (1.2K tons) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (14 tons) were the main products of cheese and curd imports to Brazil, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while imports for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, the most traded types of cheese and curd in Brazil were fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($9.6M), cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($7.7M) and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) ($107K), with a combined 99% share of total imports.

Brazil Cheese And Curd Imports by Country

In June 2023, Argentina (2.8K tons) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to Brazil, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese and curd imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (314 tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (55 tons), with a 1.7% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-1.6% per month) and the Netherlands (-0.9% per month).

In value terms, Argentina ($14M) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to Brazil, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($1.8M), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 3.2% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+1.1% per month) and France (+5.7% per month).
