Brazil Commercial Refrigeration Equipment Imports
In 2023, approx. 1.1M units of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) were imported into Brazil; rising by 30% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 1.2M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment imports totaled $191M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Imports peaked at $198M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (802K units) constituted the largest commercial refrigeration equipment supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, commercial refrigeration equipment imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (99K units), eightfold. Ireland (79K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+6.7% per year) and Ireland (+60.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($98M) constituted the largest supplier of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) to Brazil, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($29M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Ireland, with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+6.1% per year) and Ireland (+55.2% per year).

In 2023, non-furniture refrigerating or freezing equipment (1M units) was the main type of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) supplied to Brazil, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, non-furniture refrigerating or freezing equipment exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, heat pumps other than air conditioning machines (57K units), more than tenfold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of non-furniture refrigerating or freezing equipment imports was relatively modest. In value terms, non-furniture refrigerating or freezing equipment ($159M) constituted the largest type of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) supplied to Brazil, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by refrigerating or freezing display counters, cabinets, show-cases ($21M), with an 11% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the commercial refrigeration equipment price amounted to $171 per unit (CIF, Brazil), shrinking by -14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $199 per unit, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($296 per unit), while the price for China ($122 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
