Brazil Derivatives Of Hydrocarbons Imports
In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of derivatives of hydrocarbons other than containing only sulpho-, nitro-, or nitroso groups, when their volume decreased by -22.4% to 4.1K tons. In general, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +13.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5.8K tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, derivatives of hydrocarbons imports fell dramatically to $15M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $31M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2023, India (1.9K tons) constituted the largest derivatives of hydrocarbons supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, derivatives of hydrocarbons imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (893 tons), twofold. Italy (767 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.4% per year) and Italy (+25.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($7.1M) constituted the largest supplier of derivatives of hydrocarbons other than containing only sulpho-, nitro-, or nitroso groups to Brazil, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($3.5M), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 19% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+27.5% per year) and India (+1.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the derivatives of hydrocarbons price stood at $3,601 per ton (CIF, Brazil), with a decrease of -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 56%. The import price peaked at $6,332 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($7,931 per ton), while the price for India ($1,516 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
