Brazil Sees Major Drop in Dry Onion and Shallot Imports, Falling to $38 Million in 2023

Brazil Dry Onion Imports

Onion and shallot imports into Brazil dropped to 134K tons in 2023, declining by -10.9% against 2022 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 270K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports declined sharply to $38M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2023, Argentina (120K tons) constituted the largest supplier of onion and shallot to Brazil, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, onion and shallot imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (5.1K tons), more than tenfold. Chile (4.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Argentina totaled -5.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-18.5% per year) and Chile (-5.1% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($29M) constituted the largest supplier of onion and shallot to Brazil, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($3.3M), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina amounted to -11.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-14.8% per year) and Spain (+0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the dry onion price stood at $282 per ton (CIF, Brazil), shrinking by -16.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 28%. The import price peaked at $485 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($780 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($239 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
