Brazil Ethanol Export Price in July 2023
In July 2023, the ethanol price amounted to $632 per thousand litres (FOB, Brazil), shrinking by -4.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 8.9% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $759 per thousand litres in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Ghana ($785 per thousand litres) and Nigeria ($762 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($618 per thousand litres) and South Korea ($620 per thousand litres) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Brazil Ethanol Export Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In July 2023, the product with the highest price was denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits ($729 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports of undenatured ethyl alcohol of an alcoholic strength by volume more than 80 % amounted to $632 per thousand litres.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: denatured ethyl alcohol (-0.6%).
Brazil Ethanol Exports
In July 2023, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol, when their volume increased by 323% to 313M litres. In general, exports showed pronounced growth. The exports peaked at 352M litres in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to July 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol exports surged to $198M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, exports enjoyed a measured expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 254M litres in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to July 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Brazil Ethanol Exports by Type
Undenatured ethyl alcohol of an alcoholic strength by volume more than 80 % (313M litres) was the largest type of ethanol exported from Brazil, accounting for a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits (628K litres), with a 0.2% share of total exports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of undenatured ethyl alcohol of an alcoholic strength by volume more than 80 % stood at +4.7%.
In value terms, undenatured ethyl alcohol of an alcoholic strength by volume more than 80 % ($198M) remains the largest type of ethanol exported from Brazil, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits ($457K), with a 0.2% share of total exports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of undenatured ethyl alcohol of an alcoholic strength by volume more than 80 % stood at +3.3%.
Brazil Ethanol Exports by Country
South Korea (146M litres), the United States (76M litres) and the Netherlands (71M litres) were the main destinations of ethanol exports from Brazil, together comprising 94% of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Ghana and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 3.8%.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +67.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for ethanol exported from Brazil were South Korea ($91M), the United States ($49M) and the Netherlands ($44M), together comprising 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Ghana and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 4.3%.
Among the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +64.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
