Brazil's Imported Clay Shows Sharp Decline, Falling to $4.3M in 2023

Brazil Expanded Clays Imports

In 2023, approx. 1.2K tons of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag were imported into Brazil; waning by -34.8% against 2022 figures. Overall, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 2.2K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays imports contracted dramatically to $4.3M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $7.5M. Imports by Country

the UK (336 tons), the United States (275 tons) and Norway (181 tons) were the main suppliers of expanded clays imports to Brazil, together comprising 65% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +126.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($2.5M) constituted the largest supplier of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag to Brazil, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($886K), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 8.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK totaled +47.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-4.1% per year) and China (+14.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the expanded clays price amounted to $3,519 per ton (CIF, Brazil), picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, expanded clays import price decreased by -21.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 74% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $4,473 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($7,389 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($603 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+38.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
