Glass Fiber Cost in Brazil Increases to $9,478/Ton After 2 Months of Growth

Brazil Glass Fiber Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the glass fiber price amounted to $9,478 per ton (CIF, Brazil), with an increase of 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from February 2022 to February 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, glass fiber import price increased by +30.5% against December 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $10,401 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($54,505 per ton), while the price for India ($3,094 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Brazil Glass Fiber Import Prices by Type

As there is only one major imported type of glass fiber, the average price level is determined by prices for glass fibres and glass wool.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for glass fibre voiles amounted to +230.7% per month.

Brazil Glass Fiber Imports

In February 2023, approximately 430 tons of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers were imported into Brazil; surging by 13% compared with the month before. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when imports increased by 73% against the previous month.

In value terms, glass fiber imports soared to $4.1M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 48% against the previous month.

Brazil Glass Fiber Imports by Type

In February 2023, glass fibres and glass wool (430 tons) was the main type of glass fiber supplied to Brazil, with a approximately 100% share of total imports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of glass fibres and glass wool was relatively modest.

In value terms, glass fibres and glass wool ($4.1M) constituted the largest type of glass fiber supplied to Brazil.

Brazil Glass Fiber Imports by Country

In February 2023, China (264 tons) constituted the largest glass fiber supplier to Brazil, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, glass fiber imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (54 tons), fivefold. India (39 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (+45.3% per month) and India (-5.6% per month).

In value terms, China ($1.1M) constituted the largest supplier of glass fiber to Brazil, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($448K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 4.6% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-3.5% per month) and Turkey (+9.4% per month).
