Price of Knives and Scissors in Brazil Decreases by 7% to $4.1 per Unit

Brazil Knife And Scissors Export Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the knife and scissors price stood at $4.1 per unit (FOB, Brazil), dropping by -7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 19% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $4.9 per unit in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to June 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Colombia ($8.9 per unit), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($3.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Knife And Scissors Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was knives with cutting blades, serrated or not (including pruning knives) ($14.9 per unit), while the average price for exports of blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208 ($2.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208 (+4.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Knife And Scissors Exports

In June 2023, exports of knives, scissors and blades from Brazil surged to 1.3M units, jumping by 17% compared with May 2023. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 81% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 2M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports rose rapidly to $5.3M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 75% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 7.7M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Brazil Knife And Scissors Exports by Type

Table knives (567K units), knives having fixed cutting blades (523K units) and scissors and tailor shears (148K units) were the main products of knife and scissors exports from Brazil, together accounting for 96% of total exports. Knives with cutting blades, serrated or not (including pruning knives), blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208 and clasp knives lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.6%.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208 (with a CAGR of +1.7%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, knives having fixed cutting blades ($2.4M), table knives ($1.9M) and scissors and tailor shears ($539K) appeared to be the most exported types of knives, scissors and blades from Brazil worldwide, together accounting for 92% of total exports. Knives with cutting blades, serrated or not (including pruning knives), clasp knives and blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208 lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.7%.

Blades; cutting, serrated or not, excluding those of heading no. 8208, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

Brazil Knife And Scissors Exports by Country

Mexico (367K units) was the main destination for knife and scissors exports from Brazil, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, knife and scissors exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (165K units), twofold. Argentina (130K units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico totaled -3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the United States (-7.1% per month) and Argentina (-4.3% per month).

In value terms, Mexico ($1.4M), the United States ($696K) and Argentina ($418K) appeared to be the largest markets for knife and scissors exported from Brazil worldwide, together comprising 47% of total exports. These countries were followed by Paraguay, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Peru, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Hong Kong, with a CAGR of +54.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
