Brazil's Mica Trade Grows 5%, Reaching $2.8 Million in 2023

In 2023, the amount of mica exported from Brazil reduced to 3.2K tons, which is down by -10.6% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 5K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mica exports expanded remarkably to $2.8M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United States (1K tons), Germany (820 tons) and France (682 tons) were the main destinations of mica exports from Brazil, with a combined 80% share of total exports. China lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 19%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the United States ($1M), China ($669K) and Germany ($622K) constituted the largest markets for mica exported from Brazil worldwide, together accounting for 82% of total exports.

China, with a CAGR of +73.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the mica price amounted to $880 per ton (FOB, Brazil), increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable increase from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, mica export price increased by +38.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 21%. The export price peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,086 per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($707 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
