Brazil Mixed Fertilizer Imports

In 2023, overseas purchases of mixed fertilizers decreased by -2.9% to 8.9M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -17.6% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at 11M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mixed fertilizer imports contracted markedly to $4.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 120% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Russia (3.3M tons), Morocco (1.8M tons) and the United States (1.3M tons) were the main suppliers of mixed fertilizer imports to Brazil, together accounting for 71% of total imports. China, Saudi Arabia, Norway and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mixed fertilizer suppliers to Brazil were Russia ($1.7B), Morocco ($965M) and the United States ($660M), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia, China, Norway and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main suppliers, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +27.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In 2023, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) (5.2M tons) constituted the largest type of mixed fertilizers supplied to Brazil, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates (2M tons), threefold. Mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers (1.4M tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) imports stood at +7.6%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates (+5.0% per year) and mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers (+11.1% per year).

In value terms, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) ($2.9B) constituted the largest type of mixed fertilizers supplied to Brazil, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates ($956M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers, with an 11% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the mixed fertilizer price stood at $516 per ton (CIF, Brazil), with a decrease of -40.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 75%. The import price peaked at $870 per ton in 2022, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Saudi Arabia ($551 per ton) and Morocco ($547 per ton), while the price for Norway ($384 per ton) and Finland ($427 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
