In 2023, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of nucleic acids and their salts, when their volume decreased by -19% to 31K tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +55.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 38K tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, nucleic acids imports reduced to $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.2B, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2023, China (19K tons) constituted the largest nucleic acids supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, nucleic acids and their salts, other heterocyclic compounds, n.e.c. in heading number 2934 exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, heterocyclic compounds; containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused (8.7K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (4.6K tons), with a 15% share.

With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: heterocyclic compounds; containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused (-1.4% per year) and heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (+10.9% per year).
In value terms, nucleic acids and their salts, other heterocyclic compounds, n.e.c. in heading number 2934 ($789M) constituted the largest type of nucleic acids and their salts supplied to Brazil, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure ($263M), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by heterocyclic compounds; containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused, with a 3.4% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the nucleic acids price stood at $35,571 per ton (CIF, Brazil), surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated measured growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, nucleic acids import price increased by +29.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 22%. The import price peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($107,110 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($5,746 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
