In 2023, shipments abroad of orange juice (single strength) increased by 13% to 3.9M tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +46.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) exports surged to $1.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +87.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 26%. From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +20.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-0.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the orange juice (single strength) price stood at $406 per ton (FOB, Brazil), rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($418 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($367 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
