Import of Paper Making Machinery in Brazil Decreases to $14 Million in 2023

Brazil Paper Making Machinery Imports

In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, when their volume decreased by -30.1% to 364 units. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 71%. Imports peaked at 647 units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper making machinery imports dropped modestly to $14M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 52%. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (260 units) constituted the largest supplier of paper making machinery to Brazil, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, paper making machinery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (20 units), more than tenfold. Taiwan (Chinese) (19 units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (-13.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-15.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($6.9M) constituted the largest supplier of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard to Brazil, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($1.4M), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-9.4% per year) and Germany (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the paper making machinery price amounted to $33,200 per unit (CIF, Brazil), with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $56,640 per unit. From 2016 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($136,930 per unit), while the price for Switzerland ($15,587 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
