Brazil Piper Pepper Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of piper pepper decreased by -6.8% to 80K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 93K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, piper pepper exports fell rapidly to $252M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by -18.8% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $348M in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
Vietnam (17K tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Brazil, accounting for a 21% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (7.6K tons), twofold. Morocco (7.4K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam totaled +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+55.6% per year) and Morocco (+73.4% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($51M) remains the key foreign market for piper pepper exports from Brazil, comprising 20% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($23M), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam amounted to +25.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+61.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+43.0% per year).

Pepper of the genus piper, neither crushed nor ground (80K tons) was the largest type of piper pepper exported from Brazil, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by pepper (of the genus piper), crushed or ground (852 tons), with a 1.1% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of pepper of the genus piper, neither crushed nor ground exports amounted to +10.0%.
In value terms, pepper of the genus piper, neither crushed nor ground ($249M) remains the largest type of piper pepper exported from Brazil, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by pepper (of the genus piper), crushed or ground ($3.7M), with a 1.5% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of pepper of the genus piper, neither crushed nor ground exports amounted to +2.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the piper pepper price amounted to $3,134 per ton (FOB, Brazil), shrinking by -12.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 61%. The export price peaked at $9,149 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Argentina ($4,135 per ton) and Germany ($3,721 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,952 per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($2,956 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
