Brazil Plywood Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of plywood decreased by -8.9% to 2.1M cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by -18.4% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 2.6M cubic meters in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plywood exports dropped significantly to $695M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.2B. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
the United States (716K cubic meters) was the main destination for plywood exports from Brazil, accounting for a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, plywood exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (241K cubic meters), threefold. the UK (200K cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.6% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +18.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+34.6% per year) and the UK (+0.9% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($260M) remains the key foreign market for plywood exports from Brazil, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($72M), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with an 8.7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+31.9% per year) and the UK (-1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the plywood price stood at $332 per cubic meter (FOB, Brazil), reducing by -19.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $471 per cubic meter. From 2022 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($364 per cubic meter) and Denmark ($337 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($281 per cubic meter) and Germany ($289 per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
