Brazil's Poultry Export Soars to a Record $9B in 2023 With a 1% Increase

In 2023, the amount of poultry exported from Brazil expanded rapidly to 4.8M tons, increasing by 8.3% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 15%. The exports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, poultry exports reached $9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Exports by Country

China (682K tons), the United Arab Emirates (440K tons) and Japan (428K tons) were the main destinations of poultry exports from Brazil, with a combined 32% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Mexico, Iraq, Singapore and Hong Kong lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +89.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for poultry exported from Brazil were China ($1.6B), Japan ($949M) and the United Arab Emirates ($887M), together accounting for 38% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, Iraq, Singapore and Hong Kong lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +86.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Chicken meat (4.7M tons) was the largest type of poultry exported from Brazil, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by turkey meat (62K tons), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of chicken meat exports totaled +2.9%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: turkey meat (-3.9% per year) and duck and goose meat (+7.9% per year).

In value terms, chicken meat ($8.8B) remains the largest type of poultry exported from Brazil, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by turkey meat ($166M), with a 1.9% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of chicken meat exports stood at +2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: turkey meat (-1.4% per year) and duck and goose meat (+8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the poultry price amounted to $1,870 per ton (FOB, Brazil), waning by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,007 per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($2,358 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($611 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
