Brazil's Imports of Power Tools Decrease by 31% to $195M in 2023

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of power tools decreased by -21.1% to 8.9M units in 2023. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 52%. Imports peaked at 11M units in 2022, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, power tool imports shrank remarkably to $195M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (8.4M units) was the main power tool supplier to Brazil, with a 94% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia (207K units), with a 2.3% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (109K units), with a 1.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+2.4% per year) and Mexico (+0.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($143M) constituted the largest supplier of power tools to Brazil, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($13M), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+5.1% per year) and Germany (-5.6% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2023, in-hand motor grinders, sanders and planers (7.4M units) constituted the largest type of power tools supplied to Brazil, with a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, in-hand motor grinders, sanders and planers exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, saws for working in the hand, with self-contained electric motor (850K units), ninefold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of in-hand motor grinders, sanders and planers imports stood at +7.9%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: saws for working in the hand, with self-contained electric motor (-3.7% per year) and drills of all kinds for working in the hand, with self-contained electric motor (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, in-hand motor grinders, sanders and planers ($165M) constituted the largest type of power tools supplied to Brazil, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by saws for working in the hand, with self-contained electric motor ($21M), with an 11% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the power tool price stood at $22 per unit (CIF, Brazil), dropping by -12.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $30 per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($61 per unit), while the price for China totaled $17 per unit.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.6%).
