Brazil's Import of Rare Earth Metal Surges Significantly, Reaching $1.4 Million in 2024

Brazil Rare Earth Metal Imports

In 2024, supplies from abroad of rare earth metals was finally on the rise to reach 414 tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, rare earth metal imports soared to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2024, China (349 tons) constituted the largest supplier of rare earth metal to Brazil, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, rare earth metal imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (24 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong (17 tons), with a 4.1% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-2.8% per year) and Hong Kong (-0.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($1M) constituted the largest supplier of rare earth metals to Brazil, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($282K), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong, with a 3.1% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to -6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-2.2% per year) and Hong Kong (-8.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the rare earth metal price amounted to $3,504 per ton (CIF, Brazil), declining by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $9,367 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($11,869 per ton), while the price for Hong Kong ($2,655 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
