Brazil's Silicone Imports Drop to $217 Million in 2023

In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of silicones (in primary forms), when their volume decreased by -17% to 37K tons. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at 45K tons in 2022, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, silicone imports reduced markedly to $217M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +41.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports by Country

the United States (10K tons), Germany (9.5K tons) and China (9K tons) were the main suppliers of silicone imports to Brazil, together comprising 78% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($94M) constituted the largest supplier of silicones (in primary forms) to Brazil, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($44M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+1.2% per year) and China (+14.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the silicone price stood at $5,860 per ton (CIF, Brazil), which is down by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 36%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $6,264 per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($9,133 per ton), while the price for China ($3,480 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
