Brazil Synthetic Yarn Imports
In 2023, approx. 176K tons of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers were imported into Brazil; remaining relatively unchanged against 2022 figures. Overall, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 200K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, synthetic yarn imports contracted significantly to $344M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $619M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (113K tons) constituted the largest synthetic yarn supplier to Brazil, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, synthetic yarn imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (30K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (22K tons), with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +14.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-11.0% per year) and India (+8.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($206M) constituted the largest supplier of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers to Brazil, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($60M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-14.2% per year) and India (+4.2% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (124K tons) constituted the largest type of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers supplied to Brazil, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (52K tons), twofold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale imports amounted to +1.8%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (-6.0% per year) and yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (+0.6% per year).
In value terms, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($229M) constituted the largest type of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers supplied to Brazil, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($113M), with a 33% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the synthetic yarn price stood at $1,954 per ton (CIF, Brazil), reducing by -25.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $3,087 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($5,227 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,632 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
