Brazil Wood Pulp Exports
After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of wood pulp decreased by -4% to 19M tons in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +92.9% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 20M tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, wood pulp exports shrank to $8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +32.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $8.5B in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country
China (9.6M tons) was the main destination for wood pulp exports from Brazil, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, wood pulp exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (2.7M tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (1.4M tons), with a 7.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+3.3% per year) and Italy (+4.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($3.8B) remains the key foreign market for wood pulp exports from Brazil, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($1.2B), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at +9.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+1.5% per year) and Italy (+2.3% per year).
Exports by Type
Chemical wood pulp (18M tons) was the largest type of wood pulp exported from Brazil, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, chemical wood pulp exceeded the volume of the second product type, dissolving grade wood pulp (1M tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by semi-chemical wood pulp (100K tons), with a 0.5% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of chemical wood pulp exports stood at +6.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: dissolving grade wood pulp (+9.5% per year) and semi-chemical wood pulp (+10.4% per year).
In value terms, chemical wood pulp ($7.2B) remains the largest type of wood pulp exported from Brazil, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by dissolving grade wood pulp ($755M), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by semi-chemical wood pulp, with a 0.8% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of chemical wood pulp exports amounted to +4.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: dissolving grade wood pulp (+7.9% per year) and semi-chemical wood pulp (+9.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the wood pulp price amounted to $418 per ton (FOB, Brazil), declining by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $546 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($566 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($357 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
