Brazil's Pix Payment System Set to Transform E-Commerce with New $30 Billion Projection

Brazil's Pix payment system is anticipated to revolutionize e-commerce spending by handling an estimated $30 billion within the next two years. This projection comes as a result of a new feature that will facilitate recurring bill payments, according to a study released by financial technology firm Ebanx.

Initially launched in late 2020, Pix has swiftly become the preferred method of payment across Brazil, significantly surpassing the usage of traditional credit and debit cards while also reducing the reliance on cash transactions. As per data sourced from IndexBox, Pix currently manages over 2 trillion reais, which equates to approximately $338 billion, in monthly transactions.

In an ambitious move to enhance its offering, the Brazilian central bank plans to introduce "Pix Automático" in June. This feature is set to automate the payment of recurring bills, benefiting sectors such as utilities and streaming services. Ebanx's vice president of product, Eduardo de Abreu, emphasized the importance of this development, noting its potential impact on segments heavily dependent on recurring revenues, such as software as a service and streaming services.

Despite credit cards being seen as the primary competitor, Abreu predicts that the new feature's growth will primarily be fueled by new customers entering the market, particularly those who currently lack access to credit cards or sufficient credit. While Ebanx has based its $30 billion estimate solely on e-commerce, the actual volume of total payments processed by Pix Automático could significantly exceed this forecast.

Traditionally, recurring bills in Brazil have been managed using bank invoices and automatic debiting, requiring businesses to collaborate with multiple banks. In contrast, Pix Automático will simplify this process by allowing vendors to partner with just one financial entity. However, Moody's Ratings senior analyst Alexandre Albuquerque suggests that traditional lenders are unlikely to be substantially threatened by the introduction of Pix Automático due to their diversified revenue streams and client incentives like cashback on credit-card transactions.
