Steadily growing European breakfast cereal market reached $4.1B in 2020. Imports keep pace with consumption growth, rising by 7.5% in volume terms in 2020. France and Germany remain the largest consumers and importers of breakfast cereals in the EU, being actively engaged in mutual trade. In 2020, most products imported to Germany came from Poland and the Netherlands, while Belgium and Spain were the key suppliers to France.
Breakfast Cereal Consumption in the EU
For the fifth year in a row, the EU breakfast cereal market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.8% to $4.1B in 2020. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2020.
The countries with the highest volumes of breakfast cereal consumption in 2020 were France (268K tons), Germany (250K tons) and Spain (191K tons), with a combined 43% share of total consumption. In value terms, the largest breakfast cereal markets in the EU were France ($790M), Germany ($598M) and Spain ($363M), together comprising 43% of the total market.
Breakfast Cereal Imports in the EU
In value terms, breakfast cereal imports expanded markedly to $2.9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020. For the seventh consecutive year, the EU recorded growth in purchases abroad of breakfast cereals, which increased by 7.5% to 1.1M tons in 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2020.
Germany (184K tons), France (151K tons), the Netherlands (118K tons), Belgium (110K tons), Spain (84K tons) and Italy (75K tons) represented roughly 65% of total imports of breakfast cereals in 2020. In value terms, Germany ($449M), France ($446M) and the Netherlands ($270M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, with a combined 40% share of total imports.
In 2020, the breakfast cereal import price in the EU amounted to $2,648 per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Austria ($3,763 per ton), while Belgium ($2,003 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
Major Suppliers of Breakfast Cereals to Germany and France
In 2020, most breakfast cereals imported to Germany came from Poland (23K tons), France (23K tons), the Netherlands (21K tons), Turkey (20K tons) and the UK (18K tons). These five countries provide 57% of the total volume of imports to Germany.
In 2020, Belgium, Germany and Spain were the major exporters of breakfast cereals to France with the volumes of supplied production 39K tons, 34K tons and 25K tons respectively. The combined share of these three countries comprised 65% of total imports to France.
