Britain's Economic Growth Forecast Faces Downgrade

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is set to reduce its growth forecast for the coming years, placing pressure on UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves to either cut spending or increase taxes. Source.

As the OBR provided its initial economic assessment ahead of the approaching Spring Statement scheduled for March 26, the outlook appears grim. The watchdog's adjustment is attributed to the UK's economic stagnation during Labour's initial months in leadership, with potential downgrades expected for 2024 and 2025.

Economists at the IndexBox platform echo these concerns, forecasting a strained economic environment. Within this context, the OBR's previous 2024 real GDP growth projection of 1.1% is likely to be revised downward, closer to a consensus forecast of under 0.7%. Similarly, the 2025 estimate of 2% might be brought in line with a more modest 1.3%.

Andrew Goodwin of Oxford Economics expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of the current 2% growth target for this year, citing the economy's recent lackluster performance. He cautions that without a significant uptick, the revised growth expectations are unattainable.

In response to these economic headwinds, Ms. Reeves faces increasing pressure to implement measures ensuring fiscal stability. The Chancellor's previously announced National Insurance hike for employers may have exacerbated the situation, fueling the debate around potential policy corrections moving forward.
