British Industry Raises Concerns Over Government's Decarbonization Policy

In an open letter to Sarah Jones, the Minister of State for Business and Trade, the Energy Intensive Users Group (EIUG) highlighted the risks posed by the UK government's decarbonization policy on energy-intensive sectors. The full statement is available in detail here.

Signed by UK Steel, the Metalworkers Union (GMB Union), and other industrial representatives, the letter supports the government's goals of economic growth and zero emissions but notes significant hurdles. High energy costs, policy uncertainties, and the threat of carbon leakage challenge investments needed for decarbonization, highlighting energy costs in the UK as higher compared to Europe, the US, and Asia.

The industries call for government initiatives such as increasing network cost compensation from 60% to 90% to align costs with key European countries. Concerns about reliance on "intermittent technologies" like renewables and the unclear future of funding for carbon capture, hydrogen, and electrification technologies pose additional barriers.

The letter also discusses the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), set for 2027, which risks creating trade imbalances with the EU's earlier start date in 2026. If not adjusted, the gap could redirect carbon-intensive imports from the EU to the UK, prompting calls for trade protections.

The Steel Industry Council identifies addressing high energy costs as its immediate priority, emphasizing the need for government cooperation to ensure a competitive and sustainable future for British industry.
