British Investors Pull £640 Million from Equity Funds in January

In a surprising turn of events, British investors withdrew a net £640 million ($799 million) from equity funds in January, marking the end of a streak of inflows. This development, reported by Calastone, highlights a shift in investor sentiment as UK-focused funds experienced their sixth-largest monthly net withdrawals on record.

Despite British shares achieving record highs, UK investors began 2025 with notable pessimism. According to IndexBox data, UK-focused funds recorded a significant loss of £1.07 billion, underscoring the stark contrast between market performance and investor behavior. Meanwhile, European and Asian funds similarly faced net outflows, whereas North American equity funds attracted a substantial £576 million in net new investments.

Edward Glyn, head of global markets at Calastone, expressed that the record-breaking highs in the UK stock market were perceived by investors as an opportune moment to exit investments. "Apparently nothing can dent the enthusiasm for U.S. stocks," Glyn added, pointing out that even the DeepSeek AI shock failed to deter investors, as evidenced by the strong inflows in North American equity funds following the incident.

In the bond market, fixed income funds encountered a marked decline in inflows amidst volatile government bond yields, though stability returned towards the latter part of January.
