BYD's Record Sales Surge Amid Rising Chinese EV Demand in 2024

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has reported unprecedented sales figures for the year 2024, driven by a surge in domestic demand and the success of government trade-in deals. Euronews details how China's leading EV manufacturer sold a total of 4.27 million new energy vehicles (NEVs), marking an impressive 41.26% increase over 2023 figures.

Despite fierce competition from smaller Chinese EV makers such as Leapmotor, Li Auto, and Xiaomi, BYD's robust domestic sales performance has been crucial, with passenger NEV sales reaching 4.25 million units, a 41.07% jump compared to the previous year. The company's achievements in the BEV market include a sale of 1.76 million vehicles, a 12.08% rise from 2023. Meanwhile, its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a remarkable 72.83% increase, hitting 2.49 million units sold in 2024.

According to IndexBox, China's passenger car exports were valued at USD 77.7 billion in 2023, positioning the country as a significant player in the global automotive trade. The largest export market was Russia, accounting for USD 11.7 billion of the total, followed by Belgium and the United Kingdom with USD 5.9 billion and USD 5.7 billion respectively. Other notable markets included Mexico and Australia.

While Tesla remains slightly ahead with 1.78 million battery electric vehicles sold worldwide in 2024, BYD's rapid growth trajectory suggests it might soon close the gap. Tesla has grappled with declining sales, dwindling investor confidence, and shrinking profit margins, compounded by challenges surrounding its latest products like the Cybertruck and strategic layoffs amounting to 10% of its global workforce in April 2024.

China's electric vehicle market continues to expand robustly, backed by both established players such as BYD, SAIC, and Geely, and emerging companies. However, recent developments, such as EU-imposed tariffs on major Chinese EV companies, including BYD, could prompt a temporary slowdown in domestic market growth. Nonetheless, government subsidies and trade-in initiatives for phasing out older vehicles are expected to sustain consumer interest in greener technologies, steering the energy transition forward.
