Canada Chemical Wood Pulp Exports

Chemical wood pulp exports from Canada declined to 5.6M tons in 2023, which is down by -11.5% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 5%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 7.4M tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chemical wood pulp exports fell rapidly to $4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United States (2.5M tons), China (2.3M tons) and Japan (214K tons) were the main destinations of chemical wood pulp exports from Canada, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of -0.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for chemical wood pulp exported from Canada were the United States ($1.8B), China ($1.6B) and Japan ($158M), together accounting for 90% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +0.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Exports by Type

Bleached sulphate pulp (4.9M tons) was the largest type of chemical wood pulp exported from Canada, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exceeded the volume of the second product type, unbleached sulphate pulp (370K tons), more than tenfold. Bleached sulphite pulp (339K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of bleached sulphate pulp exports stood at -2.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (+4.9% per year) and bleached sulphite pulp (+4.7% per year).

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp ($3.5B) remains the largest type of chemical wood pulp exported from Canada, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by unbleached sulphate pulp ($233M), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by bleached sulphite pulp, with a 5.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of bleached sulphate pulp exports totaled -2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (+5.1% per year) and bleached sulphite pulp (+5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the chemical wood pulp price amounted to $703 per ton (FOB, Canada), declining by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $775 per ton in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Indonesia ($816 per ton) and Japan ($740 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($692 per ton) and China ($701 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
