Canada Crane Imports
In October 2023, approximately 222 units of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane were imported into Canada; jumping by 28% compared with September 2023. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, imports decreased by -8.3% against August 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 37% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 243 units. From December 2022 to October 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crane imports soared to $35M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the period from October 2022 to October 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 41M units in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to October 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
Italy (62 units), the United States (55 units) and Japan (39 units) were the main suppliers of crane imports to Canada, together accounting for 70% of total imports. Germany, Austria, Spain and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in Germany (with a CAGR of +23.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($9.9M), Italy ($7.5M) and Japan ($6.6M) appeared to be the largest crane suppliers to Canada, with a combined 68% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Austria, Spain and France, which together accounted for a further 25%.
Among the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In October 2023, the crane price stood at $160K per unit (CIF, Canada), growing by 8.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 20% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $186M per thousand units; afterwards, it flattened through to October 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($264K per unit), while the price for Italy ($121K per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
