Lamb and Sheep Meat Price in Canada Grows to $8,204 per Ton

Canada Lamb and Sheep Meat Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the lamb and sheep meat price amounted to $8,204 per ton (CIF, Canada), picking up by 2.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $10,832 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to February 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($9,696 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($5,665 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Canada Lamb and Sheep Meat Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($10,186 per ton), while the price for frozen sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses ($5,024 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts (+0.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

Canada Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports

In February 2023, supplies from abroad of lamb and sheep meat decreased by -17.6% to 1.6K tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after three months of growth. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 with an increase of 33% against the previous month.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports reduced rapidly to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 when imports increased by 46% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $31M. From May 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Canada Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports by Type

In February 2023, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (817 tons) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to Canada, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (405 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts (254 tons), with a 16% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) totaled -1.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (+7.2% per month) and frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts (-4.8% per month).

In value terms, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($5.6M), fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($4.1M) and frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts ($2.2M) were the most imported types of lamb and sheep meat in Canada, together accounting for 89% of total imports.

Canada Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports by Country

New Zealand (892 tons), Australia (626 tons) and Ireland (69 tons) were the main suppliers of lamb and sheep meat imports to Canada, with a combined 97% share of total imports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in New Zealand (with a CAGR of +1.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest lamb and sheep meat suppliers to Canada were New Zealand ($6.7M), Australia ($6.1M) and Ireland ($392K), together comprising 98% of total imports.

New Zealand, with a CAGR of +0.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
