Canada MDF Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the mdf price stood at $963 per cubic meter (CIF, Canada), picking up by 4.9% against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in February 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Chile ($1,517 per cubic meter), while the price for Malaysia ($510 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canada MDF Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In February 2023, the product with the highest price was medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($1,014 per cubic meter), while the price for medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($817 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (+1.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.
Canada MDF Imports
For the fourth consecutive month, Canada recorded decline in purchases abroad of MDF, which decreased by -3.3% to 17K cubic meters in February 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 52% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 40K cubic meters. From June 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, MDF imports totaled $17M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 42% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 35M cubic meters in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Canada MDF Imports by Type
In February 2023, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (12K cubic meters) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Canada, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (3.8K cubic meters), threefold.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm stood at -4.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-3.1% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (+5.0% per month).
In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($12M) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Canada, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($3.1M), with a 19% share of total imports.
Canada MDF Imports by Country
China (4.9K cubic meters), the United States (3.3K cubic meters) and Turkey (3K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of MDF imports to Canada, with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Switzerland, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Poland, Austria, Malaysia and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 29%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest MDF suppliers to Canada were China ($4.1M), the United States ($3.1M) and Turkey ($2.8M), with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Chile, Argentina, Switzerland, Ecuador, Austria, Poland, Belgium and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 31%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
