Canada Nitrogenous Fertilizer Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the nitrogenous fertilizer price per ton stood at $593.7 (CIF, Canada), with a decrease of -5% against the previous month. Over the last six-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $772.5 per ton. From March 2022 to July 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Oman ($789.0 per ton) and Algeria ($643.0 per ton), while the price for the United States ($533.0 per ton) and Norway ($541.0 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canada Nitrogenous Fertilizer Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In July 2022, the product with the highest price was calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) ($3.0K per ton), while the price for ammonium nitrate ($450.8 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution (+9.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canada Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports
In July 2022, overseas purchases of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) decreased by -11% to 130K tons, falling for the second month in a row after five months of growth. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 with an increase of 68% m-o-m.
In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports dropped significantly to $77M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when imports increased by 151% month-to-month.
Canada Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports by Type
In July 2022, urea (83K tons) constituted the largest type of nitrogenous fertilizer supplied to Canada, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, urea exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, ammonium nitrate (23K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution (20K tons), with a 15% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of urea stood at +17.6%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: ammonium nitrate (-7.8% per month) and mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution (+5.5% per month).
In value terms, urea ($52M) constituted the largest type of nitrogenous fertilizer supplied to Canada, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution ($12M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by ammonium nitrate, with a 13% share.
Canada Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports by Country
In July 2022, the United States (74K tons) constituted the largest nitrogenous fertilizer supplier to Canada, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, nitrogenous fertilizer imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Algeria (28K tons), threefold. Trinidad and Tobago (13K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the United States totaled +11.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Algeria (+48.2% per month) and Trinidad and Tobago (-46.2% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($39M) constituted the largest supplier of nitrogenous fertilizer to Canada, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($18M), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States stood at +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Algeria (+42.4% per month) and Oman (+112.8% per month).
