Canada's Import of Nuts (prepared or Preserved) Dips Marginally to $394 Million in 2024

Canada Nuts Imports

In 2024, purchases abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) was finally on the rise to reach 54K tons after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 304%. Imports peaked at 61K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports dropped modestly to $394M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2014 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2024, the United States (32K tons) constituted the largest supplier of nuts (prepared or preserved) to Canada, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (8.3K tons), fourfold. Vietnam (3.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-0.5% per year) and Vietnam (+3.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($307M) constituted the largest supplier of nuts (prepared or preserved) to Canada, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($32M), with an 8.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.4% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+4.8% per year) and Thailand (-0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the nuts price amounted to $7,319 per ton (CIF, Canada), flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 255% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $43,407 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($9,624 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,614 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
