Canada Paper and Paperboard Exports

Paper and paperboard exports from Canada contracted to 5.4M tons in 2023, reducing by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, exports showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 3.8% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 8.1M tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports shrank to $5.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United States (4.1M tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Canada, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (369K tons), more than tenfold. the UK (152K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.8% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at -4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+0.4% per year) and the UK (+5.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($4.3B) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard exports from Canada, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($249M), with a 4.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 2.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+1.0% per year) and the UK (+7.2% per year).

Exports by Type

Graphic papers (3.4M tons), packaging materials (1.9M tons) and toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper (85K tons) were the main products of paper and paperboard exports from Canada, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by packaging materials (with a CAGR of +1.6%), while the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, paper and paperboard with the largest exports in Canada were graphic papers ($3B), packaging materials ($2.1B) and toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper ($144M), together comprising 99% of total exports.

In terms of the main product categories, packaging materials, with a CAGR of +2.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the paper and paperboard price stood at $972 per ton (FOB, Canada), stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average export price increased by 23%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $973 per ton, leveling off in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,042 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($567 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
