In October 2023, shipments abroad of pork was finally on the rise to reach 79K tons for the first time since June 2023, thus ending a three-month declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 when exports increased by 15% month-to-month.
In value terms, pork exports fell to $211M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when exports increased by 15% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
The United States (25K tons), Japan (13K tons) and Mexico (9.6K tons) were the main destinations of pork exports from Canada, with a combined 59% share of total exports. China, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest markets for pork exported from Canada were the United States ($78M), Japan ($45M) and Mexico ($19M), with a combined 67% share of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, China, the Philippines and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 23%.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +8.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (32K tons), frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (30K tons) and fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (9.4K tons) were the main products of pork exports from Canada, with a combined 90% share of total exports. These products were followed by frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat and frozen carcases of pig meat, which together accounted for a further 9.6%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by frozen pork carcase (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($104M), frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($67M) and fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($25M) constituted the most exported types of pork from Canada worldwide, together accounting for 93% of total exports. Frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat and frozen carcases of pig meat lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.9%.
Frozen pork carcase, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In October 2023, the pork price amounted to $2,664 per ton (FOB, Canada), shrinking by -4.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 when the average export price increased by 7.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,813 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($3,594 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,543 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
