Canada Pulses Exports
In 2023, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of pulses, when their volume increased by 12% to 5.2M tons. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 7.5M tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pulses exports rose to $3.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
China (1.6M tons), India (830K tons) and the United States (521K tons) were the main destinations of pulses exports from Canada, together accounting for 57% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for pulses exported from Canada were China ($616M), India ($596M) and Turkey ($385M), with a combined 46% share of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Peas (dry) (2.5M tons), lentils (2M tons) and beans (dry) (392K tons) were the main products of pulses exports from Canada, together accounting for 95% of total exports. Chick peas, broad beans and horse beans (dry) and pulses, nes lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.5%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by pulses, nes (with a CAGR of +36.0%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, pulses with the largest exports in Canada were lentils ($1.7B), peas (dry) ($1.1B) and beans (dry) ($421M), with a combined 93% share of total exports. Chick peas, pulses, nes and broad beans and horse beans (dry) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7%.

Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the pulses price stood at $666 per ton (FOB, Canada), falling by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated moderate growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, pulses export price increased by +80.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 31%. The export price peaked at $723 per ton in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($1,040 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($392 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
