Canada’s Pulses Price Remains Relatively Stable at $829 per Ton

Canada Pulses Export Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the pulses price stood at $829 per ton (FOB, Canada), rising by 1.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $884 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was China ($1,824 per ton), while Latvia ($417 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canada Pulses Exports

In August 2022, shipments abroad of pulses decreased by -18.9% to 233K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after two months of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 162% against the previous month. the Canada exports peaked at 415K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pulses exports declined rapidly to $193M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 136% against the previous month. the Canada exports peaked at 337K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Canada Pulses Exports by Country

Australia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about 176K tons, which reached 28% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United States (72K tons) and France (18K tons), together constituting a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - the UK (17K tons), Brazil (16K tons), the Netherlands (13K tons), China (11K tons), the Czech Republic (9.6K tons), Romania (7K tons), Latvia (6.9K tons), Estonia (6.7K tons), Poland (6.3K tons) and Germany (6.1K tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.

Exports from Australia decreased at an average monthly rate of -8.6% from January 2022 to August 2022. At the same time, Estonia (+49.8%), Romania (+44.5%), the Netherlands (+15.0%), Latvia (+13.3%), the Czech Republic (+8.3%), the United States (+5.5%), Poland (+5.3%) and Brazil (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +49.8% from January 2022-August 2022. By contrast, France (-4.3%), China (-8.0%), the UK (-11.4%) and Germany (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+6.9 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from January 2022-August 2022, the share of Australia (-2.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($105M), the United States ($70M) and China ($21M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in August 2022, with a combined 41% share of total exports. Brazil, France, the Netherlands, the UK, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +44.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
