Canada Vitamin Imports
In 2023, purchases abroad of provitamins and vitamins decreased by -10.4% to 15K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 18K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, vitamin imports contracted sharply to $235M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -21.2% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked at $320M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
China (6.4K tons), the United States (5.3K tons) and France (938 tons) were the main suppliers of vitamin imports to Canada, together comprising 83% of total imports. Switzerland, Germany, the UK and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the vitamin price amounted to $15,408 per ton (CIF, Canada), waning by -8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $42,637 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($21,180 per ton), while the price for China ($10,815 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
