Price of Vitamins Drops Significantly to $12.8 per kg in Canada

Canada Vitamin Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the vitamin price amounted to $12,803 per ton (CIF, Canada), with a decrease of -15.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 19% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $19,863 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($22,481 per ton), while the price for China ($11,033 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Canada Vitamin Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was vitamins; vitamin B12 and its derivatives, unmixed ($49,525 per ton), while the price for vitamins; vitamin c and its derivatives, unmixed ($4,287 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by vitamins; vitamin B12 and its derivatives, unmixed (+6.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canada Vitamin Imports

In June 2023, purchases abroad of provitamins and vitamins was finally on the rise to reach 1.3K tons after two months of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when imports increased by 19% against the previous month.

In value terms, vitamin imports reached $17M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 17% against the previous month.

Canada Vitamin Imports by Type

Vitamins; vitamin c and its derivatives, unmixed (443 tons), vitamins; vitamin e and its derivatives, unmixed (303 tons) and vitamins; n.e.s. in heading no. 2936, including natural concentrates (299 tons) were the main products of vitamin imports to Canada, together accounting for 78% of total imports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in vitamins; n.e.s. in heading no. 2936, including natural concentrates (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, vitamins; n.e.s. in heading no. 2936, including natural concentrates ($4.6M), vitamins; vitamin e and its derivatives, unmixed ($4.4M) and vitamins; n.e.s. in item no. 2936.2, and their derivatives, unmixed ($3.8M) constituted the most imported types of provitamins and vitamins in Canada, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Canada Vitamin Imports by Country

The United States (614 tons), China (420 tons) and France (113 tons) were the main suppliers of vitamin imports to Canada, together accounting for 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, India, Germany and the UK, which together accounted for a further 11%.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest vitamin suppliers to Canada were the United States ($7.8M), China ($4.6M) and France ($1.5M), together accounting for 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Switzerland, Germany and the UK, which together accounted for a further 14%.

In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
