Canada's Wine Price Shrinks Markedly to $4.8 per Litre

Canada Wine Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the wine price stood at $4.8 per litre (CIF, Canada), shrinking by -7.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.7% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $6.3 per litre in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($7.7 per litre), while the price for South Africa ($970 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Canada Wine Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was sparkling wine ($8.1 per litre), while the price for wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) amounted to $4.6 per litre.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by sparkling wine (-0.4%).

Canada Wine Imports

Wine imports into Canada fell modestly to 27M litres in February 2023, waning by -4.4% against January 2023 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 27% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 48M litres. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine imports contracted to $127M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when imports increased by 22% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 252M litres in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to February 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Canada Wine Imports by Type

In February 2023, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (26M litres) was the main type of wine supplied to Canada, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sparkling wine (1M litres), more than tenfold.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) amounted to -2.6%.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($119M) constituted the largest type of wine supplied to Canada, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sparkling wine ($8.3M), with a 6.5% share of total imports.

Canada Wine Imports by Country

Australia (6.1M litres), Italy (5.1M litres) and France (3.6M litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Canada, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, Spain, South Africa, Chile and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wine suppliers to Canada were Italy ($29M), the United States ($27M) and France ($25M), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main suppliers, Australia, with a CAGR of +0.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
