Canada Wood Pulp Exports
In 2023, exports of wood pulp from Canada reduced to 7.9M tons, with a decrease of -9.4% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 9.9M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood pulp exports plummeted to $5.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $7.2B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
China (3.5M tons), the United States (2.7M tons) and South Korea (369K tons) were the main destinations of wood pulp exports from Canada, with a combined 84% share of total exports. India, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for wood pulp exported from Canada were China ($2.3B), the United States ($1.9B) and India ($246M), together comprising 83% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +6.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Exports by Type
Chemical wood pulp (5.6M tons) was the largest type of wood pulp exported from Canada, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, chemical wood pulp exceeded the volume of the second product type, semi-chemical wood pulp (1.8M tons), threefold. Dissolving grade wood pulp (419K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of chemical wood pulp exports stood at -2.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: semi-chemical wood pulp (-1.5% per year) and dissolving grade wood pulp (-5.2% per year).
In value terms, chemical wood pulp ($4B) remains the largest type of wood pulp exported from Canada, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by semi-chemical wood pulp ($957M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by dissolving grade wood pulp, with a 6.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of chemical wood pulp exports stood at -1.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: semi-chemical wood pulp (-1.5% per year) and dissolving grade wood pulp (-6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the wood pulp price stood at $676 per ton (FOB, Canada), reducing by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $752 per ton in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($746 per ton) and Indonesia ($720 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($616 per ton) and China ($653 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
