Canadian National and IBEW Reach Tentative Agreement, Averting Strike

Canadian National Railway Co. and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of Canada (IBEW) have successfully reached a tentative four-year contract agreement, effectively avoiding a strike that was planned to begin this Tuesday. More details can be found in the original report.

The IBEW, which represents around 750 signals and communications employees, had been operating without a contract since December 31, 2024. The negotiations commenced on September 24, 2024, and concluded with this tentative agreement. A strike could have jeopardized more than a third of Canadian National's revenue linked to trade with the United States.

While details of the agreement have not been disclosed—as the Montreal-based CN mentioned, they will remain confidential until ratification—the deal averted a significant work stoppage that could have disrupted not only the railway operations but also sectors relying heavily on such logistics.
