Capgemini CEO Criticizes EU's AI Regulations

PARIS - Aiman Ezzat, the chief executive of French IT consulting group Capgemini, criticized the European Union's stringent artificial intelligence regulations, stating they complicate technology deployment for global firms in the region. In an interview with Reuters, Ezzat expressed his concerns ahead of the AI Action summit in Paris.

The EU's AI Act, described as the most comprehensive legislation of its kind, has faced criticism for potentially stifling innovation. Ezzat remarked, "In Europe, we went too far and too fast on AI regulation," highlighting the challenges posed by the lack of global regulatory standards.

Capgemini, one of Europe's leading IT services companies with clients like Heathrow Airport and Deutsche Telekom, collaborates with tech giants such as Microsoft, Google Cloud, and AWS. The firm's CEO hopes that discussions at the Paris summit will bring some alignment between regulators and companies on AI policy frameworks.

Data protection authorities in Europe are also vigilant about potential privacy law breaches by AI actors. Recent inquiries and analyses on the Chinese startup, DeepSeek, have drawn attention due to its breakthrough capabilities, which Ezzat described as "a game changer." Despite being open-source, the lack of transparency in DeepSeek's datasets remains a concern.

Capgemini is in preliminary discussions to implement DeepSeek's models with its clients, marking a new phase of technological collaboration.
