Cboe Global Markets Expands U.S. Equities Trading to 24/5 Format

Cboe Global Markets has announced its groundbreaking initiative to extend U.S. equities trading to a 24-hour, five-day-a-week format, according to a recent report by Reuters on February 3, 2025. This strategic move aims to address the growing global demand for continuous trading access to the U.S. stock market.

This ambitious plan will be implemented on the Cboe EDGX Equities Exchange, effectively minimizing trading breaks to weekends only. By doing so, Cboe plans to cater to an increasing number of retail investors seeking extended trading hours. In this light, several brokers and exchanges have already expanded their offerings, including the New York Stock Exchange's proposal to extend trading hours to 22 hours each business day.

"We continue to hear from market participants globally - particularly those in Asia-Pacific markets like Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Australia - that they want greater access to U.S. equities trading and need trusted venues that can offer transparency, robust liquidity, and efficient price discovery," stated Oliver Sung, head of North American Equities at Cboe Global Markets.

This 24-hour trading model will empower retail investors to conduct trades overnight between the U.S. market's close at 8 p.m. ET and the opening of pre-market trading the next morning at 4 a.m. ET. The move not only facilitates overseas investors to perform trades during regular hours but also offers U.S. investors the agility to respond to significant news events occurring later in the day.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, the increasing interest in extended U.S. trading hours reflects broader global financial shifts and a surge in capital flows engaging diverse time zones. This could potentially lead to a historic evolution in global trading patterns, demonstrating the dynamism and interconnectedness of modern financial markets.
